Types of Car Insurance

Bodily Injury Liability
If you are legally liable for injuries caused in an accident, bodily injury liability coverage pays for medical bills, lost wages, legal costs, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses. This coverage is required in most states.

Property Damage Liability
Property damage coverage pays for repairs to the other person’s car, and for repairs to anything you hit with your vehicle (a street lamp, fence, building, etc) if you are legally liable for repairs to another person’s vehicle or property. This coverage is mandatory in most states.

Collision
Collision coverage pays for damage to your car as the result of a collision with another vehicle. You will be reimbursed the cost of fixing your car (once you have paid the deductible amount) even if you caused the accident.

If you did not cause the accident, your insurance company should make a claim from the other driver to cover repair costs.

Collision coverage is optional in all states. If your car is financed, your lending institution will require you to have this coverage.

Comprehensive
Comprehensive coverage protects you for losses due to hazards not caused by a collision with another vehicle.

Comprehensive includes damages caused by:
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Fires
  • Falling objects
  • Earthquakes
  • Storms
  • Animals
Comprehensive coverage is optional in all states.

Comprehensive coverage pays out if your car is stolen. It usually covers windshield repair or replacement.

For leased or financed vehicles, comprehensive coverage is almost always required by the financing company.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Uninsured and underinsured coverage protects you and other passengers if you are injured in an accident by a motorist who is uninsured and held legally responsible. It covers medical expenses and other incurred expenses up to the coverage limits you select.
