How To Filing an Auto Insurance Claim

1. At The Scene Of The Accident
  • Make sure everyone is ok
  • Call 911 for police and medical assistance
  • Get any necessary medical attention even for minor injuries
  • Get a police report to help resolve any issues with your auto insurance claim
  • Get the other driver's name, address, phone number, license plate number,
  • Insurance carrier, and insurer's phone number
  • Take photographs of damages at the scene of the accident, if possible
  • Identify witnesses and ask for their names and phone numbers

2. Should You File A Claim?
If you file a claim it will go on your insurance record. You need to evaluate the cost of losing a clean insurance record against the financial burden of remaining clean and paying for any damage caused by the accident yourself (irrespective of who's to blame for the accident).

3. Contact Your Insurance Company
Contact your insurance company about the accident ASAP. An insurance adjuster will review the accident report to determine who caused the accident.

4. Being Contacted By The Other Insurance Company
You could get a call from the other driver’s insurance company requesting your version of the accident.

Document everything you say, including the name of the customer service agent.

5. Claim Approval
If your claim is approved, an insurance adjuster will probably assess the damage or ask you to send your car to a pre-approved shop to get it fixed.

The insurance company should pay for the reasonable cost of repairs.

Insurance companies and auto body shops typically negotiate what should be repaired. You can obtain another appraisal at any auto body shop if you disagree with their conclusions.
